From Signature Canvas to Glovetanned Leather: What Coach Handbags Are Made Of

When it comes to the appeal of coach handbags, what the bags are made of counts as much as their shapes. Two materials do most of the heavy lifting: glovetanned leather, which Coach dates to the 1950s, and Signature canvas with its “C” monogram, introduced in 2001. The Signature Canvas: What It Is and How Old It Is

The Coach “C” monogram pattern is repeated across the fabric that Coach calls Signature canvas. It launched in 2001 as part of the Signature collection, during the logo-heavy fashion of the early 2000s. Reportedly, it was introduced under creative director Reed Krakoff, who joined Coach in 1997. The pattern may look classic, yet it is not a mid-century design: it appeared six decades after the 1941 workshop, despite what plenty of people assume.

Signature jacquard, a woven version of the pattern, now appears with Signature canvas in many Coach lines. Examples today include a Juliet 25 in Signature canvas and a Soho 25 in Signature jacquard. Instead of an all-over pattern, the Tabby carries the monogram in the form of Signature “C” hardware.

Pebble-Grain Leather, Natural-Grain Leather and Regenerative Leather

Leather grain affects both how a bag looks and how it wears, and it is worth knowing that not every leather coach bag is glovetanned. Coach’s horse-and-carriage emblem is another long-standing symbol, but sources do not agree on when it first emerged, leaving no reliable date.

The Limits of Storypatches and Hangtags

Every Coach bag has a Storypatch, according to Coach; the sewn-in patch bears a short statement about Coach craftsmanship and a unique registration number.
