It is just to your end up that it starts to falter, but the slap-up finale rescues it from the ‘red’. Excellently staged and you will wisely dialogued, it will have zero high difficulty inside way of life down the extremely unappealing label.” [ 8 ]

Cobb), and you will good scuffling actress (Evelyn Keyes) whose cousin (Nina Foch) did on gambling establishment and you will old an effective corrupt detective (Jim Bannon). The fresh new caustically epigrammatic program, brand new cast’s suavely managed gestures of like and hazard, and you may Rossen’s thrillingly controlled and you may smartly cocky photo (and additionally his political conscience) make this pugnacious yet , intricate spectacle a low profile classic of your genre.” [ ten ]

Cobb, because an authorities inspector, also in the score . As the plot employs a familiar trend, the new characterizations try new while the performances good enough so you’re able to overbalance. Dialogue is actually terse and relevant, preventing the psychological, phoney contact. Uncommon digital camera basics come along once in a while so you can escalate notice and you can momentarily arrest the eye. Good teamplay by the Robert Rossen, increasing because movie director-scripter, and you may Milton Holmes, completely new blogger and you can affiliate manufacturer, along with supports making it a silky development.” [ 11 ]

Its primarily a matter of enjoying Mr. Powell go through his paces stylishly when you find yourself a huge cast out-of stars and you can performers give your classic service. Evelyn Keyes plays the nice nothing lady just who brings about the newest best in your and Ellen Drew is the smooth and you will slinky vixen who becomes him to your jams. Thomas Gomez was greasy once the villain and you may Lee J. Cobb do a unique in a position concert tour as the a tired cops inspector just who ultimately shuts the outcome. A lot of taking and you may smoking is carried out by the the worried.” [ twelve ]
